Art Club Kids Visit House of Blues

The Art Club Kids had a wonderful filed trip to the House of Blues - Houston. The HOB has one of the largest collections of folk art in the country and we got to see it first hand. In preparing for the trip we studied artists in the HOB collection along with other well known folk artists such as Clementine Hunter, Rev. Howard Finster, and Sister Gertrude Morgan. The students created their own folk art piece by painting on glass showing background, middle ground, and foreground in their work.

While at the House of Blues the students created a work of art in the style of Mr. Imagination - a folk artist collected by the HOB. Glitter, beans, beads, and other objects were used to create a symbolic artwork. Everyone learned so much and had a great time! The students painted a collaborative project to present to the HOB education director, Ms. Nazanine for her collection.

Starting with the Basics

The basis of most art projects begins with drawing. We began the school year by learning about different kinds of line and different kinds of drawings. We looked at human proportions and drew a person using those proportions. Next we began gesture drawings using ourselves as live models. Then we had mannequins set up in different poses and drew from life. Finally we made a contour line drawing of one of our shoes. Who knew drawing could be so much fun!

Pots, Pots, Pots

First through fifth grade students have been busy making pottery. The larger pots are made using the coil method and the smaller pots are made by pinching the clay - pinch pots. Fourth and Fifth grades are glazing their pots and first through third grades are painting with acrylic paints. Benavidez students will have created over 800 pieces of pottery by the end of the year. We love making things with clay!

Art Club Kids are Going to THE HOUSE OF BLUES

Art Club Kids and the Benavidez Choir are going on a field trip to the House of Blues on May 19th. To prepare for our trip we are studying "outsider" artists and folk artists. Did you know that the HOB has one of the largest collections of folk art and outsider art in the country? We are studying artists like Clementine Hunter, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Rev. Howard Finster and many others. Each student is making their own artwork in a folk art style. We are creating a group project to present to the House of Blues too. Check back in May to see our finished pieces and the artwork we are giving to House of Blues.

Spring Is Here!!!

Pre- K and Kinder studied butterflies for science, symmetry for math, and the letter B all using their creative skills in making these beautiful butterflies. They were able to show their parents at their program on April 19th.

Pre-K and Kinder Study Color

Pre-K and Kinder are studying color and The Color Wheel. The children used magazines to show us their favorite color.

Later the students mixed colors using crayola model magic to create "color wheel" necklaces to take home.

Let's Rodeo!

The Rodeo Art Contest is a big deal in HISD. We had twelve entries and they all recieved ribbons. We even had some sculpture that was too big to enter, so we displayed it at school. The Art Club Kids made the sculptures from chicken wire and paper mache. It took a really long time, but it was fun!!

Design - Design - Design

Radiel Design

Art Club Kids are studying pattern and design. Using simple lines and shapes we created repeated pattern designs. We also created "pizzas" or what Ms. Stewart calls radial designs.
